Mexican food is really popular in California and always has been. The question is, with so many Mexican restaurants, how do you choose the best Mexican food? It’s difficult, as there are so many things to consider when you’re choosing a place to eat. Well, here in Riverside, CA we can help you with that. We’re connoisseurs of Mexican food, and we’ve assembled this list to simplify your search.

Anchos Southwest Grill & Bar

Anchos has been here for over 32 years. This award-winning restaurant serves Southwest Tex-Mex style food just as we like it. The restaurant has fun decorations, especially the statue with the poncho and sombrero advertising the lunch specials. All their meats are grilled over mesquite wood, giving them that extra-special flavor. For an appetizer, we recommend the Anchos nachos, a huge pile of nachos covered in their delicious mesquite grilled chicken.

For an appetizer, we recommend the Anchos nachos, a huge pile of nachos covered in their delicious mesquite grilled chicken. Tacos, enchiladas, burritos, and fajitas feature prominently on the menu. We particularly like the Chiles Rellenos, poblano chiles stuffed with jack cheese. It’s a place everyone can enjoy, as they have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available. Anchos is located at 10773 Hole Avenue, and they’re open daily from 11 am to 9 pm.

Tio’s Tacos

Tio’s has been a feature of Riverside since 1990. We have to say this restaurant is one of the most beautiful we’ve ever seen. The owner has taken junk and fashioned it into amazing artwork, that will certainly draw your attention. Skeletons on bicycles, a bottle-top bathroom door, and a bicycle on the roof are just a few of the amazing creations. After seeing the care put into the decorations, the care they lavish on creating amazing food is even greater.

The food is authentic Michoacán Mexican. Their menu isn’t large, but it contains all the Mexican foods customers know and love. We recommend the mole enchiladas, with your choice of meat cooked in a sweet and savory mole unique to Michoacán and served with rice and beans. They also have a kid’s menu and vegan and vegetarian options. Tio’s can be found at 3948 Mission Inn Avenue, and they’re open daily from 10 am.

Habanero Mexican Grill

Habanero is a family-owned restaurant that serves old-style California Mexican food. The atmosphere is warm and very welcoming, and the owner will even stop by for a chat. Service is friendly, fast, and very efficient. Their food draws rave reviews from locals and visitors alike for the authentic flavors, healthy portions, and excellent value for money.

We recommend the Camarones a la Diabla, shrimp in a spiced sauce with guacamole, rice, and refried beans. For a vegetarian option, the fajita vegetable enchiladas hit the spot.
