There’s nothing quite as enjoyable as jumping into the car with family or friends, picking a spot outside of your normal routine, and heading off to discover new things on a fun and exciting day trip. And there are not many places in the country with so many great places to visit nearby than Riverside, CA. Located between the beautiful and world-renowned California coastline and the soaring Sierra Nevada mountains, Riverside offers so many day trips!

1. Jurupa Mountains Discovery Center

If you’re going on a short getaway and taking your children with you, then we definitely recommend giving Jurupa Mountains Discovery Center a visit. It’s an educational facility that feels more like an adventure park! Visitors can take part in rock collecting activities, in which they will learn about the different kinds of rocks that are found in the Riverside region. Additionally, the on-site museum features an impressive collection of dinosaur fossils from t-rexes to velociraptors! It’s absolutely worth the trip!

2. San Bernardino National Forest

Despite its name, the San Bernardino National Forest doesn’t only include forests. The protected area also hosts deserts and soaring mountain peaks, so when you visit you’ll see a wide variety of landscapes. The Forest is home to hundreds of miles of hiking trails, 42 campgrounds, seven rivers, and the two tallest mountains in southern California. Just keep in mind that if you decide to camp, you’ll need to get a permit if you want to have a campfire.

3. Lake Arrowhead

While you’re in the San Bernardino National Forest, be sure to take the trip to Lake Arrowhead, which is nestled in a picturesque valley between snow-capped mountains in what some call the Californian Alps. The area around Lake Arrowhead is a fantastic spot for cycling and hiking, but our favorite thing to see there is the antique queen riverboat that is docked at the local pier. You can take a tour on the riverboat around the lake, which lasts an hour.

4. Gold Rush Mining Adventures

California first gained worldwide fame as a destination for prospectors to try their luck searching for gold, and since then California has maintained a close relationship with its roots. Gold Rush Mining Adventures is a great place for you and your family to also experience the thrill of finding a diamond in the rough. The activity center lets you try panning for your own gold, and the gift shop features different rocks and minerals for a wide range of uses.

5. Tom’s Farms

Beginning as a 3,500-square-foot produce stand, Tom’s Farms is now a fantastic spot to enjoy with the entire family. Both children and adults alike can have a blast on the carousel, the train that goes around the property, and the shooting gallery. There are a ton of things to do at Tom’s Farms, so make sure you get there early!
